Margate
Founded in 1950s by Jack Marquese, what is now Margate city in Broward County, once used to be a part of the Everglades and farmlands. Its name is a portmanteau of the first three letters of the founder’s last name and the first four letter of the word ‘gateway’ (since it was deemed the Gateway to Western Broward County).
Thanks to rapid development and expansion that followed, there was a huge influx of settlers and it officially received its city status in 1961. Since then, there was no looking back. Tide after tide of change drastically altered its landscape, and today, its inhabitants enjoy superior quality of life, with excellent outdoor facilities, including a water park, golf courses, nature parks, and hosts year-round fests.
The other side of Margate:
No matter where you live in South Florida, you’re always at risk of facing a flood – and Margate is no different. Several noted hurricanes including Andrew have lashed out at the city, flooding it and plunging everything into chaos. Luckily, the city doesn’t have it as worse as its neighboring areas. Back in 2014, the flood maps were redrawn and the number of properties under the flood zone fell from a staggering 12000 to 2000+ properties.
Should I opt for flood insurance or not?
As a Margate resident, you might be asking yourself this very question. Despite the flood maps being redrawn and most properties out of the flood zone, you shouldn’t cancel on or fail to avail flood insurance. As Jeanine Athias, environmental engineer for the city of Margate said, “We still live in Florida”. There’s always a chance your property might experience localized flooding in the hurricane season between June – November. That’s why, you not only need proper insurance coverage in case the inevitable happens, but also need the number of a reliable damage restoration company like Margate Restoration Company that will get to you fast, and mitigate the damage even faster.
