Founded in 1950s by Jack Marquese, what is now Margate city in Broward County, once used to be a part of the Everglades and farmlands. Its name is a portmanteau of the first three letters of the founder’s last name and the first four letter of the word ‘gateway’ (since it was deemed the Gateway to Western Broward County).
